My MtDNA - Haplogroup L2a

IntroductionL2 is the most common haplogroup among both Africans and African Americans. It arose about 95,000 years ago, but did not reach its predominance in Africa until much more recently, when Bantu-speaking populations began moving east and south from the vicinity of present-day Cameroon. That migration, which began about 4,000 years ago and lasted into historical times, reshaped the continent's genetic landscape by dramatically expanding the range of L2 and other western African haplogroups. L2a, which dates back about 55,000 years, is present in 20% or more of both Africans and African Americans.

L2 is found among African Americans whose ancestors were transported from West African slave centers.

L2a and the Bantu ExpansionHaplogroup L2a is extremely common among the vast majority of Africa south of the Sahara. In f`act, it is so widespread and diverse that it has been difficult to pinpoint where in Africa it arose. However, current thinking puts the origins of L2a somewhere in Central Africa. At the peak of the Last Ice Age 20,000 years ago, when the Sahara Desert became entirely uninhabitable and began expanding to the south, people bearing Haplogroup L2a began journeying in two directions: east toward the cooler climate of the eastern highlands, and west towards the Atlantic coast. But this ancient expansion was not to be the last in the history of L2a. Beginning about 4,000 years ago, two sub-branches of L2a — L2a1a and L2a1b — were swept up with the Bantu-speaking people of West Africa. These people, who had been practicing farming for a millennium or more, began to expand their territory and gradually introduced both their language and their way of life to their eastern and southern neighbors. Today, both L2a1a and L2a1b are well-represented in Southeast Africa, and L2a reaches levels of 36% in the southeastern African nation of Mozambique. While for the most part the barrier of the Sahara Desert prevented L2a from expanded into North Africa, the haplogroup has been found in about 4% of Tunisians. This suggests that at least a few people bearing L2a managed to cross the harsh desert.
A Transatlantic ConnectionHaplogroup L2a is also common in the Americas. In fact, it is the most common haplogroup among African-Americans, reaching levels of 20%.The high frequency of L2a among African Americans is probably due to its concentration in West Africa, which was the main supply region for the Atlantic slave trade. The vast majority of African Americans bear a type of L2a that is found only in West Africa. L2a also made its way to South America through the slave trade; today a branch of L2a, L2a1, is found in up to 40% in some Afro-Brazilian populations. In the Spittoon...What can genetics reveal about African American ancestry? Find out at the Spittoon.
L2a in EuropeAlthough it is extremely rare in Europe, haplogroup L2a has been found among a small number of people there, mostly in the eastern part of the continent. It is most common among Ashkenazi Jews from Poland, but has also been found among Romanian, French, German and Russian Jews and non-Jewish Slavs in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The distribution of L2a in Europe makes it very difficult to determine exactly how and when the haplogroup first appeared on the continent; but genetic analyses indicate that a migration from Africa during the Ice Age, more than 10,000 years ago.Source: https://www.23andme.com/you/haplogroup/maternal`

Pumpkins!

Since Halloween is around the corner and pumpkins are in abundance right now, I guess I will leave some fun facts about pumpkins! (I know...boring, right but I had nothing else to think of lol).

So here are the facts on your plumb and wonderful pumpkins that we all soooo enjoy carving and eating for the holidays:

  • The word pumpkin originates from the word pepon, which is Greek for “large melon". The French adapted this word to pompon, which the British changed to pumpion and later American colonists changed that to the word we use today, "pumpkin".

  • The origin of pumpkins is not definitively known, although they are thought to have originated in North America. The oldest evidence, pumpkin-related seeds dating between 7000 and 5500 BC, were found in Mexico. Pumpkins are a squash-like fruit that range in size from less than 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) to over 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms).

  • A pumpkin is a gourd-like squash of the genus Cucurbita and the family Cucurbitaceae (which also includes gourds). It commonly refers to cultivars of any one of the species Cucurbita pepo,Cucurbita mixta, Cucurbita maxima, and Cucurbita moschata, and is native to North America. They typically have a thick, orange or yellow shell, creased from the stem to the bottom, containing the seeds and pulp.

  • The color of pumpkins is derived from the orange pigments abundant in them. The main nutrients are lutein and both alpha and beta carotene, the latter of which generates vitamin A in the body.

Yum!

  • When ripe, the pumpkin can be boiled, baked, steamed, or roasted. In its native North America, it is a very important, traditional part of the autumn harvest, eaten mashed and making its way into soups and purees. Often, it is made into pie, various kinds of which are a traditional staple of the Canadian and American Thanksgiving holiday. In Mexico and the U.S., the seeds are often roasted and eaten as a snack.

  • Pumpkin seeds have many health benefits, as they are a good source of protein, zinc, and other vitamins, and they are even said to lower cholesterol. One gram of pumpkin seed protein contains as much tryptophan as a full glass of milk. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and phytosterols.

  • Pumpkin seed oil contains essential fatty acids that help maintain healthy blood vessels, nerves and tissues

  • Canned pumpkin is often recommended by veterinarians as a dietary supplement for dogs and cats that are experiencing digestive problems. The high fiber content helps to aid proper digestion. Raw pumpkin can be fed to poultry, as a supplement to regular feed, during the winter to help maintain egg production, which usually drops off during the cold months.

  • The medicinal properties of pumpkin include anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory.

  • East China Normal University research on type-1 diabetic rats, published in July 2007, suggests that chemical compounds found in pumpkin promote regeneration of damaged pancreatic cells, resulting in increased bloodstream insulin levels. According to the research team leader, pumpkin extract may be "a very good product for pre-diabetic people, as well as those who already have diabetes," possibly reducing or eliminating the need for insulin injections for some type-1 diabetics. It is unknown whether pumpkin extract has any effect on diabetes mellitus type 2, as it was not the subject of the study.
  • In the United States, the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season in general, long before it became an emblem of Halloween. A lit jack-o'-lantern as part of the festivities that encourage kids and families to join together to make their own jack-o-lanterns.Not until 1837, does jack-o'-lantern appear as a term for a carved vegetable lantern, and the carved pumpkin lantern association with Halloween is recorded in 1866.With folklore the jack-o-lantern connects to Halloween lore about warding off demons.

  • Black Felt
  • Two circular Styrofoam (In whatever size of your choice)
  • Black pipe cleaner sticks
  • Glue gun with glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Plastic Headband
  • A bow (buy one already made or make your own out of desired ribbon)
  • Rhinestone 2mm (any size will do, your choice)

Getting started

  1. Cut two circles from the black felt that are the same size has the circular Styrofoam. Do this for both ears.
  2. Heat up your glue gun and glue the black felt to both sides of the Styrofoam. Make sure to glue around thoroughly so that the foam is fully covered. Trim any excess black felt sticking up.
  3. Next, take two pipe cleaner sticks and wrap them around the ears, twist together to secure them. Put a little drop of hot glue on the pipe cleaner sticks to secure them in place (in SOME spots only not all the way around.)
  4. (ex. 4)
  5. Now take the plastic headband and slide both ears one at a time on the headband through a small opening between pipe cleaner stick and felt ears. Slide the ears to your desired spot and hold them in place then use hot glue to secure them on the headband.
  6. Take your bow and glue it between the ears, add a little glue at the corners of the bow and glue to the ears for extra support. You can also tie some ribbon onto the headband between both ears.
  7. You can decorate your bow with rhinestones or sequins if you like, your choice. *Best to do this before gluing onto headband. (Optional)
Now you are done! Yeah!

Got my 23andme Genealogy Kit!

Yeah! Now all I have to do is get my paternal dna. I have the results for my mothers side MtDNA - Mitochondrial DNA. My mother's side had highest matches with people of Cameroon and other West African countries such as Ghana and Sierra Leone. For European ancestry, there were a lot of matches with Spain and Portugal (Slave Trade). It is great being able to find out where your ancestors originally came from and what country of origin my African ancestors are from.

With this free test I received from 23andme I can finally get my father's side, through my brother's dna results. I can't wait for the results! Thanks 23andme.

Soul

"The "soul," that is, the person, can die (Ezekiel 18:4, 20). Here it is said that the "soul" who sins will die. We shouldn’t make too much of this, as all this verse is saying is the obvious – a person, in this case a sinning person, will die. "Soul" is simply another word for "person," and persons die (Numbers 35:11, 15). In this physical sense, the soul can be taken by God (Job 27:8) or be forfeited by a person (Habakkuk 2:10).

Jesus also said: "Whoever wants to save his life [psuche] will lose it, but whoever loses his life [psuche] for me will find it" (Mathew 16:25).

Thus, while Matthew 10:28 seems to differentiate the "soul" from the body, and implies that the former cannot be killed by humans, yet paradoxically the same writer says that "soul" can be killed (Matthew 2:20). Matthew 20:28, in essence, implies that Jesus’ "soul" was killed by men at the crucifixion. As well, one can "lose" one’s "soul," and in doing so can find Jesus. Clearly, the word psuche is used in various contexts, and it is difficult to draw any final conclusions as to what "it" (the "soul") might be in any transcendental sense.
Notice some of these contexts. Souls can also be purified by the truth (1 Peter 1:22). They can be strengthened by ministry (Acts 14:22). Hope in God’s covenant promises provides Christians with an "anchor for the soul" (Hebrews 6:19). Souls are to be entrusted to God (1 Peter 4:19). Those who endure suffering without a loss of faith will "keep their souls" (Hebrews 10:39). But, the "soul" (person) can die, by drowning, for example (Acts 27:22)."

Getting over that lonely feeling...

"In today's world, it is not uncommon to hear of someone having the feeling of loneliness. No matter what you age, race, or social status is, loneliness can affect all types of people. At some point of just about all of our lives, we have experienced some type of loneliness, whether it is for a brief period of time, or for an extended one. We as people strive for companionship and reassurance from others. Nothing seems better than to have someone who understands you and can empathize with you.

Just because someone is alone, it does not mean that they are lonely. Someone can be alone for a period of time without feeling lonely. They can still enjoy life. However, there are people who can stand the thought of being alone. According to one dictionary, it states that "alone emphasizes being apart from others but does not necessarily imply unhappiness… lonely often connotes painful awareness of being alone, lonesome emphasizes a plaintive desire for companionship." Loneliness can feel like an overwhelming feeling. It is a feeling of emptiness and a sense of isolation. But what causes loneliness?

Many times problems or situation in family life can cause loneliness. You may feel rejected because of your physical appearance. It may because of race or weight. Changes in your environment can also cause this feeling. Children who have moved to a new school or new neighborhood may begin to feel alone. If you are married, lack of communication within the marriage can produce uncertainty and isolation. How can someone over come the emotions of loneliness? Though it may not be easy, it is possible.

Keep in mind that no situation is too bad that you can not change. The feeling that you have is not permanent. Do not be unreasonably demanding of yourself, have a proper balance of what you can achieve in a certain amount of time. Feel content about your self and begin developing good habits of eating and exercising, and good a good amount of sleep each night. It is amazing on how much better you will feel when you begin to feel healthy and is active. Avoid fantasizing about other peoples lives, especially movie stars. No one has a perfect life, and fantasizing about these non existent perfect families will only cause you to feel depressed. And first and foremost, if you feel lonely, do not suffer in silence. Acknowledge how you feel and share your thoughts with someone you trust. Talking about it is much better than indulging yourself into alcohol. There is a way to make yourself feel better. With work and determination, you will be able to get over the black cloud that seem to be over you."

    Termites!

If it is not one thing there is always something else!

Now I have to deal with termites flying in the room and droppings in the window seal in this old house. I am thinking I need to move because my kids don't need to be in this! Well I had to call the landlord but he has done nothing but he makes sure to collect his rent alright! I can't stand this so I had to find a solution until the exterminator or Terminex man (however you call 'em) comes to rid the house of these nasty termites.

Termites love heat and yes, I notice they pop up when there is a lot of heat (Yeah, definitely during those summer months....ughhhh). They also seem to have come through some opening they chewed through the window.....so of course, common sense, my solution to that was keep that window closed! "Uh duh, Jamie!". Well that solution helped well. Next comes the bug spray, I know it may only work temporarily but it seems have certainly got rid of those nasty pest from flying and crawling in the bedroom. I sprayed a lot of Hot Shot and Black Flag in the window and around the corners of places they may have been chewing through..... Voila! No more of those little buggers to be found! Only their gross droppings which I had to clean up, "Ewww".

Well, I hope this last until I get professional help. Until then, If they return, which I am assuming they will, I did a little online research on home remedies to get rid of termites (while they chew your house to pieces).

Hopefully this stuff works and may be beneficial to others having the same problem as myself with termites....

Trying to multitask everyday becomes so exhausting but I have to do it or nothing will get done....::sigh::

    The seasons....

After all this heat for the past couple of months....I am so happy it is cooling down again! Yes! It drizzled for a brief moment this late afternoon and man was I relieved lol! The cool autumn breeze will come shortly, the leaves will fall and kids will be back at school. This is the time to really enjoy being indoors and snuggled up with a nice warm blanket, of course, while studying for school. All that summer heat and outdoor play will soon dwindle away and the rain and cool air will soon return.

    Which way?

Which way should I go? What direction do I go in? I am always unsure! That's life though, you never really know which path to take and will it take you to the right place? You have to learn and discover who you are first in order to go in the right direction or make the best decisions to ensure a better life for yourself. So much confusion may lay in your path but you must ignore it and get past it to get to the place you think will be best for you. It may be a hard task with a lot of obstacles in the way while getting there but if you really want it you will never give up and try whatever you can to reach the place you need to be.

    Insomnia!

So much on my mind. School, kids, and health are my main concern! When something is on my mind heavily....I won't sleep. No matter how much I try to block them out or transmute, these little thoughts stay with me throughout the night. Negative feelings, pessimism, worry, fear, strange feelings.....then positive, funny, happy....back to negative again! The cycle continues...ughhh. I know many go through this but I don't want to be apart of that "many" that deal with this. Sitting in darkness, a few stars shine in the L.a. sky outside my window, baby peacefully sleeps in his crib, while I wonder what will tomorrow hold? Will my children be OK? Am I going crazy? What will happen to me with all this negativity in my mind? How do I stop it from affecting me day to day or night to night? That's when it hits me the most. Who knows my problems? My shame? My feelings of helplessness or vulnerability? How will they judge me or will they not care? Do I find a solution on my own or get professional help? Why am I concerned what others think? I don't! Then I do. Will I ever change? Can I? May I...when!

God send your spirit to erase these negative thoughts that deprive me of sleep and  peace of mind. Release me from this mental prison of "worrisome" thoughts and doubt.  Feelings of hurt and betrayal hang over me. Show me which way to turn or what to pray or read to get me through...well out of this way of thinking that keeps me from sleep. All I want and need is peace.

    ~Jewel's Vid~

    Teething 101 with Justin

Since I have not posted in awhile....

    Update....

Baby Justin was born April 4, 2011 @ 11:27am (We both have the same rising sign)
    8lbs 5oz :-)

    *~So cute~*

Jewel was a little nervous about him when she first saw him at the hospital but she has warmed up to him so much, she acts like she is mom lol.
    They play together so nicely.

    _____________________
Justin is 4 months now and man, he is a piece of work!
He loves trying to stand up on his feet and crying loud!
Even though he is only 4 months he acts like he is 8 months lol

We are trying to get him to practice crawling but he wants you to pick him up all the time so he can "pretend stand", that's what I call it lol. He loves for you to hold him up by his little hands or his back and act like he can stand...but you just see him wobble side to side because his little legs are not ready for that yet! He must think in that little 4 month old brain of his that his legs are ready (Only for crawling now baby J!).

His sis loves to help him with trying to stand and he is so happy when she does.

I just hope I can shuffle between school, helping Jewel with her education and taking care of little man (who by the way DEMANDS and needs nonstop attention!) all at the same time. I got my work cut out for me! That's motherhood for you ;-)

I enjoy every bit of it though. Watching these little humans learn and grow everyday is amazing and I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
